I'm from the tiny island of Guam. I am Filipino and 1/4 Japanese. I enjoy playing volleyball, usually as a libero or an ace. I enjoy learning the Japanese and Korean language, I find it really exciting to be able to speak another language. A taiko drum is the first instrument I've ever learned to play.
I started playing taiko and playing with Hidaka Taiko late June of 2018. I watched Hidaka's first annual showcase and was completely impressed. Their performance sounded and looked amazing. Right after their witnessing their most impressive piece at the time, Dokokara, I was sold into joining. I wanted to be able to perform with them and recreate the feeling I felt to other people watching us play.
What I love about Hidaka Taiko... I personally love how we treat each other as if we're family. I know many groups say they're like family, but I've never met a more close-knitted group of people. When first joining, I was very intimidated, but everyone was extremely welcoming and helpful, eventually I felt like I belong. I've never met a group of people who I can be more open with in regards to my interests. Learning how to properly play taiko is challenging, but every single person is supportive and wants you to become a better player. |
